After leaving the California Institute of the Arts in 1979, Burton went to work as an apprentice animator at Disney. Here, he came face to face with the reality of working in the animation industry. He recalled being “strapped to a table all day, and you have to draw. I just flipped out.” Working with animator Glen Keane on The Fox and Hound (1979), he realized his visual sense was different from the Disney norm; he “couldn’t even fake the Disney style.” His then developed character sketches for The Black Cauldron (1980), none of which were used.
Feeling out of place and ready to leave, Burton was given the opportunity to direct Vincent (1982), a six minute short based on a children’s story he had written. The film is a humorous look at a suburban boy named Vincent who reads Edgar Allen Poe and identifies with horror film star Vincent Price.

Like most U.S cities, Chicago is a magnet for immigrants, and this trio of Mexican-Americans have named themselves Allá (Over There), as a way of referring to their background. But apart from the fact that their vocalist Lupe Martinez sings in Spanish, there’s little about their psychedelic Latin pop that might indicate their roots.
The band’s debut album Es Tiempo (It’s Time) is apparently the culmination of four years work in various venues, including John McEntire’s Soma Electronic Studios. Perhaps unsurprisingly then, parts of this album suggest the influence of his post-rock ensemble Tortoise, most obviously El Movimiento, and the stumbling percussion and saturated sounds of Tú y yO, which closes with an intriguing blitz of electronic effects. With its surging string and brass arrangements, Un Pedazo reflects the space jazz experiments of Chris Bowden, with an additional nod to Milton Nascimento. The hypnotic title track underlines the band’s declared love of Krautrock, while Golpes del Sol sounds like a subtle tribute to Brian Wilson.

Visually This Modern World draws inspiration from a retro, 1950s sensibility, with brightly colored illustrations that are also inspired by clip art. Initially, the strip was almost completely composed of actual vintage clip art and magazine cutouts, assembled collage-style and often manipulated and retouched. However, Tomorrow has gradually replaced cutouts with his own drawings, which merely mimic the clip art look. Usually drawn in four panels, it is not uncommon for all panels to be identical or nearly so, with only the dialogue and/or facial expressions changing.
